Our primal pet

Goat images on stone wall

Imagine walking the goat every morning before going to work or watching television with the goat on your lap. Weird idea? Goats have been our pets for centuries, just like dogs.

About 10,000 years ago, people in the Middle East domesticated the wild Capra Aegagrus (Bezoar goat). Keeping goats slowly expanded to other goats and areas. In a few centuries, the goat conquered Asia, Africa and Europe. There are now about 450 million goats in the world, divided over about 200 breeds. You will find them everywhere, except at the North Pole and South Pole. Nor in the International Space Station, yet.

In their original, dry habitats, goats were mainly kept for their meat and hides. The stone-age Europeans discovered that goats can produce a lot of milk. Soon goats became an indispensable part of daily life. Goat milk and goat cheese are loved by millions. Goat yoga and goat cuddling do not sound that crazy anymore. So goats really deserve a place on the couch, don’t you think?
